Partner with a values-driven, experienced team to take your generosity further.
If you’re looking to make a greater impact through a Donor Advised Fund, Group Advised Fund, or family foundation, we want to talk to you. In addition to providing the grantmaking expertise you’re looking for, we act as a guide, sharing our collective know-how and insights from the field and connecting you with our ecosystem of grantees and other funders doing similar work.
A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is a dedicated grantmaking fund established at a 501(c)(3) entity. A donor such as yourself establishes this fund by making a grant to Proteus Fund, and while we control the funds, you would retain the right to recommend grant distributions. We conduct due diligence, and present these recommendations for approval by our Board of Directors.
A DAF is an important philanthropic tool, providing a cost-effective alternative to creating a private foundation. A DAF allows you to claim an immediate tax deduction while offering the flexibility to recommend grants to nonprofit organizations on any timetable. Some other advantages of a DAF:
Building on the DAF model, we also offer Group Advised Funds (GAF). A GAF allows you and your partners to pool resources and recommend grants together. In the GAF model, each donor’s contributions are tax-deductible, but you would not each individually retain grant recommendation authority. Together, the donors determine your own group process for deciding on grant recommendations, and designate a representative to convey recommendations on behalf of the entire group.
In establishing a DAF or GAF at Proteus, you join a community of like-minded philanthropists, and have access to Proteus’s expert team of strategic grantmakers.
With over two decades of experience, we are a leader in rapid response grantmaking and have particular expertise in making grants to new and grassroots groups. We streamline requirements and processes to lessen the burden on grantees, allowing us to move funds quickly. Our team conducts due diligence on all grant recommendations to ensure compliance with IRS regulations, coordinates grantee reporting, and tracks recommendations over time.
Customized services are also available, including strategy development for long-term giving and docket preparation. In addition, Proteus Action League, our 501(c)(4) sister organization, offers Donor Advised c4 Accounts, which provide a complementary vehicle to support lobbying work in service of your philanthropic goals.
As a family foundation managed by Proteus, you would benefit from our years of experience connecting clients to national movements, developing strategies, and providing resources to help grow your foundation’s profile and leverage greater impact through grantmaking. We are committed not just to effective fund management, but to empowering philanthropists and facilitating collaboration to achieve social justice.
Our services include:
We also support complementary activities such as funder briefings, conference and convening sponsorship, and specialized research.
We’d love to talk to you about managing your Donor Advised Fund, Group Advised Fund, or family foundation.
